Perth Montessori School is an independent school in Western Australia, formed in 1982. The school educates children from playgroup (0-3) through to secondary school (13-18).
In total there are 250 students and 32 members of staff. The school has a BYOD policy, leading to a diverse range of devices — including laptops, Microsoft Surface tablets and Chromebooks — entering the network.
Deputy Principal Ian Michael is in charge of the IT network and ensures that the school provides a safe internet environment for all students and staff no matter what device they are using.
Perth Montessori were experiencing abuse of their internet access. Students were increasingly using anonymous proxies to try to access inappropriate websites. Inappropriate content needed to be blocked without hindering access to useful online learning resources.
With many different age groups within the school, Ian wanted to provide different levels of access to different groups of students. As a result he required the ability to create policies tailored to each kind of user.
The school’s BYOD policy meant that a diverse range of devices would access the network. Perth Montessori needed to be sure that the web filtering solution could effectively filter all mobile devices.

Perth Montessori decided to deploy Smoothwall UTM because of its flexibility and the all-in-one nature of the solution.
Content-Aware Web Filtering has controlled the use of anonymous proxies and provided a safe web environment for students and staff: “Smoothwall UTM has helped us prevent students accessing inappropriate websites”.
The comprehensive Reporting Suite has also highlighted that teachers, aswell as students, were spending time on non-work related websites: “A quick review of the logs showed a significant amount of time spent on social media and shopping sites”.
Ian was impressed with how easily configured the solution was during installation: “We were up and running in less than two hours”.
He is particularly pleased with the post-installation support the school has received: “The support team is always helpful, even when confronted with cutting edge tasks involving new software”.
With Smoothwall in place, Perth Montessori are confident they showcase their commitment to e-safety: “Smoothwall provides assurance to our students’ parents that we are a cybersafe school”.
